Apply for the $100,000 Africa Food Prize

The search for the 2020 Africa Food Prize is on!

The USD 100,000 prize celebrates Africans who are taking control of the continent’s agriculture agenda and changing the reality of farming in Africa from a struggle to survive to a business that thrives. It puts a bright spotlight on bold initiative and technical innovations that can be replicated across the continent.

Farmers continue to have difficulty accessing markets. If they are not constrained by distance, limited quantities of produce sees farmers receive low prices for their product. Many farmers also do not have access to storage, which means they usually sell their produce at harvest time when the price is lowest, or risk having the quality of their produce slowly eroded because of poor storage technologies.

Limited technical knowledge also means farmers can be slow to adopt modern agricultural practices that are more productive, commercial and sustainable. And with effects of climate change becoming real, this need to continue learning and adopting becomes even more important as farmers counter the increasingly challenging conditions.

The Africa Food Prize exists to reward pioneering efforts to overcome these obstacles and encourage others to follow their lead.

The winner will be chosen by the Africa Food Prize Committee, an independent body of preeminent leaders that is chaired by the former Nigerian President, H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo. The winner will be awarded at a high-profile gala dinner at the 2020 African Green Revolution Forum to be held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Any individual, academic or research institution, private or public organization, corporate entity, or governmental unit may submit a nomination for the Africa Food Prize.

To be eligible for the Prize, the nomination must be submitted in writing, in English or French. All nominations, and the identity of the nominator, or nominating organization, will be kept in confidence

DEADLINE: June 1, 2020
